listen to master of puppets. then listen to it again. don't stop listening to it until you appreciate that it is, in fact, one of the best albums of ALL TIME.

i'm surprised to hear that coming from you, never saw you as a fan
i love master of puppets. quite like a scattering of metallica songs from all eras (not st. anger, though) but i think master of puppets is a damn near perfect package, start to finish.

It's a very fine album. It's just a shame they didn't stop after the black album, then they'd have gone out with their dignity intact.
I used to love Metallica right from when Kill 'Em All came out...then when the Black album came out I thought it was pretty lame so stopped bothering and don't think I've bought anything by them in 16 years. I saw them at Donnington in '95 and they frankly bored me. Master of Puppets is a classic though...I'll have to dig it out.
Ride the lightening is the daddy if only for Creeping Death and Call of Ktulu...... aside from that metallica bore my balls.... oh yeah apart from So Fucking What..and thats only for comedy value

And that's a cover...
Personally on the Metallica issue, I love the early stuff and quite like a lot of later stuff. Least favourite albums are re-load, st anger and the black album. I do like load quiet a bit, and love "The Outlaw Torn" from it. Basically Load is a great Rock album - people thinking of it in the context of metal are only going to be disappointed.
That's my opinion, and by the way people often have different ones. Isn't that strange?
I think that were all the songs on Load as good as Until It Sleeps or The Outlaw Torn then it'd be one of Metallica's best albums. But it has too much filler.
The only Metallica album I can't stand is St. Anger which from what I've heard of it may well be the worst album I've ever heard.
Ride The Lightning for me, then Justice, then the Black album... MOP is also great but the production really takes a lot out of it I think, it's too dry and dull. Justice has rubbish production too but that works in the context of the overall atmosphere of the album for some reason....
The live boxset is a very worthwhile buy too - the DVD of the Seattle 1989 show from the Justice tour is just fantastic stuff.
