After a week of listening to a high proportion of experimental and drone styled projects (at the time I came across this) – and attending gigs of a similar nature – it felt homely to find some good old, straight up doom from Kneel! Worm, out of Ontario. The four tracks of Violent Mists are doom and sludge as we know it, but they do so in a manner that is fresh and engaging throughout.

It begins with a witchfinder styled sample, the demented screams of a preacher, with instrumentation that is slow and deliberate. A tripped-out doom tone emerges and stretches out – all dark, of course, but too relaxed to be truly evil sounding, instead wading in the waters of doom bliss. Its simple nature starts to become psychedelically affecting, a state you could reside within serenely for eons.

1C3 C0LD is perhaps the best of the lot, with its , swaggering, staggering, woozy sludge groove, a pub floor stickiness constitution to its filthy tone, and doom goodness running through its core as it swings back and forth. The interestingly titled Galactic Dong closes, rotting through the earth and into the catacombs, breaking its shackles somewhat latter on as it kicks into a groove that is almost death-doom in the way it struggles through the murky muddiness beneath its feet.

It ends as it should then – in utter sludge filth. This doesn’t break any new ground, but it doesn’t need to, providing as it does a perfect doom tonic just when required.
