Last Messiah is an impressive way to introduce yourselves to the world. Cavernous Crypt are a blackened death-doom band from Krasnodar in Russia and whilst this is only a four-track EP it does more than enough to leave a lasting impression.
Опустошитель leads the charge, death metal from the deepest dungeons, barking from its crypt. Before long it settles into a glorious rolling death-doom riff that is like an instant working narcotic, I can feel it coagulate in my veins immediately, as I become lost in its mire. The following Yроборос Трагедий is just as thrilling, as a crunching sludge doom riff opens, revolving slowly on its decaying guitars. Pace is injected to turn to a buzzing death metal in its second half. It is pure death-doom goodness.
The next track feels like a little bit of a drop off, but you quickly realise this is only in the context of the stellar output that came before. The EP ends with Экзистенциальный Yжас (which is worth the translation – ‘Existential Dread’) and its gorgeous thundering riff.
It is a breathless release, over in little more than 20 minutes, leaving you hungry for more. This is pristine death-doom, built upon riffs that sweep you away on roaring tides.
