Anyone in Sheffield know a bit more than me and fancy helping me out?
Not in Sheffield unfortunately but the last (first!) time I was involved in buying a car I got some helpful tips from someone a bit more clued up in the whole process, these are what I can remember:
Lift up the carpet in the boot and see whether there are any ripples or crinkles in the metal, if so then it's been the victim of a serious rear-end shunt and is best avoided.
Easier to have someone else for this one, but start the engine from cold and look at the exhaust smoke, if it continues to belch grey/black smoke for too long that also not a good sign.
Open the filler cap and check for any white residue, this could mean that the head gasket has gone and again the car is best avoided.
Give each 'corner' of the car a good downward shove, if it bounces more than once or twice the suspension might be buggered.
Open the cap on the radiator and give it a good sniff, if shouldn't smell strongly of oil something has cracked or broken.
Put the car into fifth gear and attempt to start it (seriously). It should stall immediately. Can't remember what the significance of this was, most likely gearbox related.
can't fault my car, yet anyway, i've had a new water pump fitted and that's the only problem so far, touch something wooden, much better than the MG, or the last clio i had. The only annoying thing is i can't see where the front of the car ends which can be bit of an issue when parking/getting out of tight spaces.
