Mountain bike advice

    • I'm annoyed now. Dale's Cycles sold the last one in 19" yesterday and aren't getting any more in as the 2009 stocks are coming in soon.

If anyone can find me a 19" Specialized Hardrock Comp Disc for £300 I would be a very happy man.

    • I'll have a hunt later for ya. Try chain reaction cycles, wiggle.com and evans for alternatives
    • PodgePodge
    • good choice, though do you really need a 19?

mine is 17 and there is still a lot of room, though i am a bit shorter than you and my is full suspension so if it was 19 i'd be a mile off the floor

      I think so yeah.

I've rung so many places. One place has them but won't deliver to my work address which is a pain as I'm never at home for deliveries.

get the postie to ride it round

    • I've just ordered it from there anyway. I'll worry about getting it later. Will probably have to go to the depot to pick it up.

      STOP...
go here www.cyclescheme.co.uk/ then speak to your work. you could save UP TO 46% by getting it TAX FREE, then if you buy something from the outgoing year at knock down prices, you'll be saving silly amounts of money.

Cheers for that podge. Suggestion made on our company intranet. Will see what they say.

Got an email about this today, £30 a month for hiring a bike you might not own after 12 months? Balls to that.
    • PodgePodge
    • thats not quite how its supposed to work but it can look like that.
    • GarethGareth
    • I thought I was missing something but that's how it looked to me.
    • PodgePodge
    • yeah, you kind of need a back door agreement with your boss that you'll be given or sold for a quid the bike after x amount of time.
    • GarethGareth
    • I work for the government, it'll be by the book. If I end up moving further from town I'll invest in a bike but walking does me fine for now.
    • mambamamba
    • It arrived today. Looking forward to going for a spin tonight.

    • what is it about cycling that gives people a dirty mind?

mine is off for a service this weekend as its creaking worse than my knees
    • mambamamba
    • Pretty pleased with it so far. Had a good ride round the old Greenham Common airbase last night.

But why did no one warn me of the damage it would cause to my arse. I can barely sit down!

You need to adjust the saddle, sounds like it's pointing upwards
    • PodgePodge
    • i made a girl almost cry with laughter just because i said "arse pounding"

i have a full suspension bike, my bum stays nice and comfy. if an air base is making you sore something is wrong, the stuff we were doing last night was pretty hardcore (700 foot of climbing / 12.5 miles) and the girls didn't real have a problem even with their rigid back ends.

make sure your seat level and height are sorted. if you put your heel on your pedal your leg should be perfectly straight when the crank is in line with the seat tube. most saddles are set level though i prefer mine pointing up slightly at the front. also make sure its set forwards and backwards properly or you could be resting your weight on part of it that's not supposed to.

also bear in mind that my saddle cost me £85, that's almost a third of your entire bike. that also might help in the reducing soreness stakes

    • also harder saddles are often more comfortable than the gel or soft ones, weirdly. Your ass gets more used to it after a while. my saddle is bent at the moment, I'm going to try and fix it tomorrow. I just got new tyres, new handlebars and I've fitted my roof bars and bike carriers. 4 bikes, 4 people off to the alps on saturday. my car is going to be very weighed down!

      this is very true

i had a habit of bending the rails on mine as well, but that was mainly on my hardtail and BMX

    • I'm sure my arse will get used to it. It's probably more to do with not riding a bike for 15 years than anything else.
