Oceanic

    • I'm not an Isis fan, but I never realised this album had such a dark theme:

From the Wikipedia page on it:

The album reintroduces the water and female themes of past releases the Red Sea and Celestial through a story: A man at the brink of emotional numbness finds a female counterpart who completes him ("The Beginning and the End," "False Light"). However, he soon finds that she has had a long-term incestuous relationship ("Maritime," "Weight;" "a day, it changes everything") with her brother ("Hym," "The Other"). This drives him to lose all hope, and he commits suicide through drowning ("from sinking sands, he stepped into light's embrace").

The entire story is described by frontman Aaron Turner in a radio interview and in more nebulous terms in the album's booklet.

I am an Isis fan but i have to say although i was aware of some obvious connotations i did not know about the whole incestuous relationship section... that warrants a listen in a new light so to speak.... i always thought Oceanic was epic but preferred Panopticon... which is unusual because being an Isis fan usually = masturbating over Oceanic on a daily basis

    • I think its a load of cobblers, its a good album, with a great ocean/sea theme, nothing more to me.

    • IT's a brilliant album, but I always think it should finish after Weight (much as I love hym)

    • I went to the Oceanic performance a couple of years back in the 'dont look back' ATP thingy and it was breathtaking but the track that really stood out was In Fiction (from Panopticon) as the Encore.... i definitely think it is their most emotively powerful song... great build up

Flatlands went there. Weight was crap without Maria Christophers vocals.

    • I felt a bit ripped off she wasn't there, surely those nights are the album in its entirety? They not only had no Maria, but no ambient tracks between the album tracks, and they added a certain Mr Broadrick on guitar for some of it! Yeah, "In Fiction" is probably their best song and they played that AFTER and it was BETTER.

    • I'm not sure we could 'Black Sluice' note for note, it's got to change a bit.

I'm sure I reviewed that gig but can't find it in the archives.

    • Fair point, G. I'd imagine as far as the ambient tracks went, they decided to steer clear of any "standing around while the DAT plays" awkwardness. In our case, if we really wanted to replicate the whole of the album, we'd have a bit in the middle of just G playing keys over a tape while the rest of us stood about looking daft. And who wants that? Eh?

On a proper piano? Me, unsurprisingly. Which was probably your point.
