Calculon Records Updates

• PodgePodge
• ok so i have bloody loads to update in my distro and i'm planning on doing a few every day till its cleared.

today's are

Loan - Kobazuloan Saikerak
8 tracker from Spain with heavy psychedelic jams, with much instrumental passages, wailing wah-wah guitars and a desert rock feeling to it. Cannot be untold, but this have several real good tracks on it. Sludge and Noise Rock from Vas Countty. For fans of Black Sabbath, Plican, Moho or Soundgarden.

Ganon - As above, So Below
GANON is from Detroit,Michigan and play sludgy, post metal in the "Neurosican"(A term coined to connotate music similar to what is considered 3 legendary bands in the post metal scene.....Neurosis,Isis,Pelican)style.GANON released their first full-length album "In the Dead of Sleep" in 2006.Besides a line-up consisting of a drummer, bassist and vocalist/keyboardist,GANON utilized three guitar players.Guitarist Matt left the band after the recording of "In the Dead of Sleep",and GANON choose not to replace him.Covering all the genre's bases of ebbing, tidal builds, introspective segues, mountainous layered peaks of heft and emotional roars, this Michigan sextet's tangibly ISIS and PELICAN influenced post metal is as solid as it gets and highly recommended.

The Devil And The Sea - Heart V's Spine
The lack of subtlety with the majority of this material is clearly illustrated by ten minute opener "Batwing". Slice n' dice bursts of sludge-y noise-rock initially kick you in the teeth repeatedly until the band latches onto a controlled, hulking doom groove. Slow as sin riffs are punctuated with rollicking, mid-paced pummel that breaks things up appropriately, never allowing boredom to seep in. The overall sleaze and general tuning of the guitars reminds me of 16 at times. That feeling of thick doom simmered in jagged NYC tones hovers like an endless haze over this material. The monstrous title track takes its good old time to unfold before your eyes. This lengthy track gives TDATS a good chance to present their normal attack in its slowest incarnation. Lung scraped screams and nearly sung shouts mangle your ears as the music goes through a metamorphosis from ultra slow sludge, to spacious post-noise, a brief stop in head crush doom rock territory with a final, culminating burst of droning noise-rock thrown in for good measure. An endless void of evil screams, furious explosions of industrial guitar/bass noise and plodding drum smashes finishes off the record in the form of "Abra Cadaver"; an appropriately psychotic mess of ending noise.

Highgate - st
Kentucky power trio Highgate debut on Israeli specialist doom label with this self-titled album. It comes as no surprise that the label has chosen to release this particular album as this is a harrowing record full of minimalist doom, experimental noise and grim black metal. Highgate feels as a mix between Eyehategod, Khanate and Burzum. The vocals by guitarists James Porter and Greg Brown are painful, desolate and straining. With painful throaty screams, punk-like shouts and black metal styled shrieking. The drumming by Steve Porter is minimalist in structure and almost tribal in approach. This self-titled album consists of one gargantuan track, clocking in at almost 50 minutes. The track is build up through various stages and sections which are neatly separated by well-placed tempo changes. This gives the track the feel of a regular album and not one long track, which is actually the case here. The production is clear and powerful but fittingly minimal, very much reminiscent of Khanate in that sense. The artwork is a typical collage and seems to recount the horrors and atrocities of war and global conflict. Be sure to pick up a copy of this album, as it is limited to 1000 copies worldwide. Totalrust have unearthed another gem with Highgate.

stay tuned for more tomorrow

Today's Additions

Haemorrhage - Morgue Sweet Home
Leaning far away from the grinding exuberance of past pleasantries, Morgue Sweet Home is an unapologetic murder-scene filled with a vile hostility previously unseen by Haemorrhage. This album is a straight-forward shot to the brain with an excessive amount of abhorrence and venom. Excessive energy vomits from the eyes, blinding and scrambling any memory of composition. Everything smears together lacking dynamics within a production that is fat like blood sausage; somewhat blurry like a frantic slaughter with a rusty chainsaw generating a flash flood of gore. Where Haemorrhage succeeded in past efforts was by their ability to create friendly yet aggressive riffs alongside bouncing grooves inducing the equivalent of a badass funeral-party. Here we find a turbulent exhibition of extermination that is belligerent, furious, but still rightly less memorable. If their intent was purely to rip your face off then they succeeded, and honestly who can be disappointed by that.

Infanticide - Extinction Scheme
It is that damn tasty sound representative of vintage crust/grind that gets me every time. It is the quick explosions of cranked 'n' crunchy guitars and nihilistic attitude that makes "Extinction Scheme" from Sweden's INFANTICIDE such a treat. Darn reliable, but in no way inventive, the band follows in the well-trodden footsteps of Sweden's better crust stompers.

For the most part, "Extinction Scheme" is speed, speed, and more speed, mixed with the occasional mid-tempo and punky groove. The vocal style is unashamedly Greenway-esque, mixed with those patented NAPALM DEATH screams. The attack? Just plan vicious. At 23 songs clocking in at just shy of 30 minutes, pretense is thrown headfirst through the living room window in favor of fuck-it-all destructiveness. The group is rather adept at briefly interrupting the breakneck pace for the aforementioned gnarly grooves, such as on "Do Not Think/Do Not Act" and "Misanthropic Approach"; so basic, yet so satisfying. A more purely crust punk — albeit still residing next door to (old) NAPALM DEATH/TERRORIZER grind — delivery is heard on tracks like "Shitstorm" with its pointed and almost catchy chorus (it's all relative, folks) and "Snaran Runt Halsen". And when you attempt to catch a breath during the opening seconds of a gloriously fat-ass and mid-paced section on "Existence on Repeat", the boys step on the gas and resume beating the snot out of you with speeding intensity.

Criminal Element - Career Criminal
Make a mental list of your top 10 all-time favourite Death Metal bands. Done? Good. Now tell me that CRIMINAL ELEMENT doesn't posses a member from at least one of these bands. This supergroup boasts among its ranks members of SUFFOCATION, DYING FETUS, CATASTROPHIC, VITAL REMAINS and PYREXIA. Needless to say, those are some big, big names (well maybe not CATASTROPHIC, but the others are).

What CRIMINAL ELEMENT have to offer is just under 19 minutes of poorly produced yet fairly satisfying Death/Grind of the very oldest school. Dirty chugging riffs, an assload of grooves, flurries of blasting Grind and a dual vocal attack of scream/growl alternation are the fare. Add one absolutely ball stomping, and I mean ball-fucking-stomping riff at the start of the title track and you've got yourself a slice of fine Death/Grind pie.

Some simple instructions for fans of SUFFOCATION, ASSUCK, NAPALM DEATH and TERRORIZER: Look at the album art in this review. Look at the 'Buy Me!' button below it. Click that button.

Exhale (Swe) - Prototype
SEE ALSO 12" Vimyl

Sweden is the Walhalla of the European grindcore scene. But with the tragic loss of Miezsko and Nasum the Swedish scene also lost its main export product. Of course there are a lot more bands that have the capabilities for an international break through. One of them is Exhale. The band was given birth in 2004, so a relatively new outfit you could say. Though two years later the lads knock on our door with a first full length album, called 'Prototype', out on Emetic Records (the label that also released stuff from Haemorrhage, Eyehategod and lots of other bands). From the first moment 'Prototype' sets the tone by opening up with a raging tempo, and to be honest, it keeps on going like a high speed train. Exhale seems to be one of those bands that like it fast an brutal, without any remorse. Keep on listening to it, since it's a quite catchy release. You could describe the sound as Dying Fetus meets Rotten Sound. Vocals vary from a hardcore alike scream to guttural deathmetal vocals. Something fans of European grindcore will appreciate a lot.

Hawg Jaw - Dont Trust Nobody
SEE ALSO 12" Vinyl

On Don't Trust Nobody, the band, which features some Eyehategod and The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight cronies, pulls back from the sludge-core sound of Send Out the Dogs and embraces a more hardcore vibe. The singing is more of a bark, the lyrics spat out than sung, and the backing instrumentation is just as stripped down. It's a lesson in minimalistic violence, as ungainly and painful as being pushed down a flight of stairs. So if you're in the mood for something with SST production and delivery, you might want to check out Hawg Jaw. It's a little more raw than Send Out the Dogs and a little more feral.

The Death Of Her Money - Spirit Of The Stairwell
The Death Of Her Money may not have a great name, but they do have a great sound. The trio from South Wales blend an appreciation for modern, heavy music together with an experimental edge to create a swirling, hypnotic maelstrom of repetitive, naturally grooving stoner-rock, kind of like Neurosis meets My Bloody Valentine meets Sonic Youth meets Can. The simplistic, rock-solid rhythmic base provides a launchpad for Kaskie's inventive, dense, discordant fretwork. "Spirit Of The Stairwell" is their debut CD album, with six tracks in 50 minutes, and follows on from self-released demos and a 7".

Army Of Flying Robots - Life Is Cheap
SEE ALSO 12"

"Army of Robots are like your favourite t-shirt... been around for nearly a decade, seen much action and reliable. Having gigged round the UK and Europe extensively for years now and thrilled crowds where ever they go. I always find it weird when people don't know this band. However, like tour partners Taint it's taken them 10 years or so to finally get round to making a full length record. They have released a few split 7" and 10" splits along with a compilation of all these released last year on the ever brilliant Super fi records. But now comes their full length and the wait has certainly been worth it.
What is evident from the off is this record has been worked upon during the years of gigging round. Tight as a gnat's chuff and fully realised well structured songs. It's the sound of how hardcore should be played. Tempo changes form insane blasts to mid tempo breaks... it's a rollercoaster of a record.
One comparison could be a less complex Converge I guess but this would really be doing the band a disservice... they are far from another one of the now numerate Converge wannabe bands. ...Robots are their own masters and have been for as long as I have known them. This is evident on the slow build into fast balls out hardcore of 'Embodiment' - my favourite track upon this record along with 'A Black Hole in One'... which has some of the best and intriguing lyrics I've read in a very long while.
Recorded at the mighty Stuck On a Name studio my only complaint would be the vocals stick out a little too much... but then I like the vocals to sit a bit more pretty in the mix... I guess that's me being anal about it as this really is a cracking record and the vocals are delivered in true venomous fashion. The panning on the guitars is superb, giving a really big sound to the whole album.
Along with Attack! Vipers! this band and this record really have re-gained my interest in listening to hardcore punk music and both have a healthy dose of metal to the mix. This CD also captures the feeling you get when you go to see this band live full of energy and vitally... 10 years in the making, but hell, the waits been worth it... lets hope its not another 10 years before the next one."

The Bakerton Group - ST
The Bakerton Group is the side project of the rock outfit Clutch. The band is comprised of four of the five members. Taking a sidestep from the token Clutch sound, The Bakerton Group is completely instrumental and pushes into foreign territory with a more southern, psychedelic, improvisational feel.

Iron Hearse - ST
This album proper from these Swindon lads sees that initial assessment verified and expanded on. Openers 'Rocktopus' and 'All Graves Empty' pair some simple heavy riffs with gruff vocals and some typical doom-style lyrics. It's pretty clear from the start this is sure as heck gonna be a rocking album with plenty of groove. But Iron Hearse are not one-style-wonders and mix in tempo shifts and solos with great effect.

Iron Hearse claim the usual influences from the past like Sabbath, Pentagram, and Hendrix (and I can hear some Thin Lizzy in there too). Now, whereas a lot of bands claim this heritage whilst actually imitating their peers, it's easy to hear that Iron Hearse are crafting their own sound in the wake of their esteemed forebears. In fact the only current bands that I would say Iron Hearse emanate from would be the aforementioned Cathedral, and on tracks like 'Blessed by the Anvil' and 'Crown of Doom' the works of Mr Scott 'Wino' Wienrich, currently rocking righteously with The Hidden Hand. Good company to keep indeed.

Leather Nun - All Your Kin
Not to be confused with the legendary cult Swedish garage, goth and industrial group (yes, they played it all), the Leather Nun in question is a California three piece specializing in some pretty nifty and agile stoner/doom rock. Some may be more prone to tag them as simply 'doom', but this trio flexes way too many muscles and the pace de rigueur isn't all that slow and lethargic per se. Out in Austria's PsycheDOOMelic records, I get to wonder how is that music this good slips the hands of any American indie. Really, this is as good, if not better, than most of the stuff out here. Comprised of nine solid tracks of beefy girth, rotund melodies, confident playing, glutonic volume, swift dynamics, majestic vocals, a lot of this material is directly derived and even somewhat lifted from seminal bands like Pentagram, Saint Vitus and The Obsessed. In other words, the dudes of Leather Nun must have a poster of Wino Weinrich to which they prey on a daily basis.

Starchild - Born Into Eternity
Twin Earth has seen the wisdom in releasing a new album by these Waycross, Georgia doomsters, and it's a step forward, while retaining the doom roots that have made them great. Viewing song titles like 'Rising Star,' 'Earthless,' and 'Born into Eternity' one might be forgiven for assuming that this was just another chapter in the Starchild saga, good as that may have been. But things are a bit different this time: The songs are shorter and the riffs are catchier - stonier if you will - while the music is still as heavy as the proverbial million pound shithammer. 'Bride' starts things off with an easy, chugging space doom feeling with vocals in a lower register. A great idea that, although I admit that vocalist and guitarist Rick's straining, higher-pitched vocals have never bothered me like they do some. But hey, I listen to Ozzy-era Sabbath and Planet Gemini on a regular basis, so what do I know? Heh. Anyway, 'Rising Star' is a catchy rocker, while 'Earthless' and 'Will You' will appeal to "old school" Starchild fanatics, with their punishing cosmic doom. In all, the playing is better than ever before, with superb leads and songwriting that takes a back seat to nobody.

Ramesses & Negative Reaction - Split CD
From start to finish I haven't got one bad thing to say about this mini album...it's heavy and full of energetic mean doom. Negative Reaction is a great doom/hardcore metal band churning out the kind of doom you would hear from bands like Grief, Bongzilla or Eyehategod. Ramesses are plenty heavy, but they have taken doom to a different place - heavy psychedelic drenched doom sound that is more upbeat then Electric Wizard. It's almost a tease, but also a good sampler about what Ramesses and Negative Reaction are all about.

Burmese & Cadaver Eyes - Split CD
BURMESE / CADAVER EYES - split CD (Heart And Crossbone) - Hardboiled noise, extreme beyond extreme, bathing in fuzz and barbed wire and violent feedback and grunting and screaming and somewhere in there there just might be some conventional musical instruments (maybe?). A split album, ''demented twins in musical crime'', just where one band ends and the next begins is beyond my ears - does it matter anyway? Apparently there are three vocalists in Burmese, who knows? Could just be a herd of wild boars loose in a studio stomping on equipment and making some kind of artistic sense as the half eaten engineer screams for his life - glorious stuff, love it! Grindcore, slices of doom, electronics and ''agonizing mechanism''. Extreme noise terror for disciples of Lustmord and endless short circuit buzz and elecrto shock treatment that ascends to a higher level of cognitive surge. Manic artistry and the sound of your crumbling life being tortured by leach women and love it, love it, love it! Yes!

Barad-Dur - Demo
'The First Coming' is the first demo by Manchester metal outfit Barad-Dur, which contains four tracks of 'high end filth' written between 2005 and 2007. 'The First Coming' is limited to 50 hand numbered copies

Barad-Dur is the solo project of Neithan the Wronged. 'The First Coming' is the first demo which is now available, containing four tracks writen between 2005 and 2007. The CD was recorded by Pete Mankarious, whom I cannot thank enough. www.myspace.com/baraddurblackmetal

• While its snowing outside i thought i'd do some updates to my distro. here are the latest ones...

Volition - ST
Volition batter out thick extreme doom metal, they show that the stoned experimental left of the genre aren't running things yet. Keeping a sense of melody high on the agenda, they are still a profoundly weighty affair. Expressing a sense of real pessimism over yer-everyday-doom-darkness, the band proves that they have a heart even if it is a pulped patchwork of nailgun scars and stitchwork

Paganus - ST
Paganus full-length features 4 tracks of vicious extreme Doom metal clocking in at almost 50 minutes! A raw Extreme heaviness filled with crushing riffs, "doomy soundscapes", wicked vocals and lots of negative emotions... Recommended for fans of Burning Witch, Khanate, High on Fire, Neurosis...

Rhino - Breed the chonesn one
To start talking about RHINO, it's fair to say that their live sound is astonishing. To watch their live show is always grateful. This first official record contains 8 long songs of around 40 minutes length. Great tunes between the slowest doom and the total chaos.Their style maybe defined as Doom/Metal/Rock with the most brutal Thrash Metal.Strongly recommended for High on Fire, Saint Vitus, Entombed or Danzig followers. This band makes good songs, and that's the way it's reflected on this first LP.Artwork by Alonso Urbanos. Presented in gatefold cover

Positiva - Centaurs Ride
This 4-piece from Spain was founded in 2002. Musicians include ex-members of the Spanish underground acts Subliminal, Gilah Monster, Bliss and Shisha Pangma. Since then they`ve released 2 demos and player gigs with Los Natas, Amon Ra, Nebula, Viaje a 800, The Sword. `Centaur`s Ride`, their first full-length album, oscillates between desert groove rock and heavy psych. The 8 tracks in 43 minutes might very well suit fans of 500 FT. Of PIPE or NIGHTSTALKER.

Amon Ra - Slaves to the moon
The power-trio that devastates any stage they lay over. Thirty years after the most famous three-piece in rock history, Motörhead, established a name in the genre, Amon Ra present Slaves to the Moon. Sure to be considered a modern classic of the 70's psychedelic Stoner Rock. If you go ape with the majesty of early Black Sabbath and Motörhead's raw power, just imagine adding some of Purple's magic, the feeling of Hendrix, and the coolness of Spiritual Beggars. There you got it!

Dystopia - The Aftermath...
Some things can't be faked. Such as the energy of this californian grind/metal/sludge outfit, beloved misanthropic doom-sayers for over a dozen years. The creativity in their expression is 100% original, utilizing numerous change-ups and vocal styles, spastic drumming and muddy, uncompromising guitar work. Drummer Dino provides wide-range grindy vocals, from high screeching to low, guttural growls. This album includes material recorded from 1995-97, re-mastered for your ear-abusive pleasure

VA - Sound of the Catacombs
Compilation album featuring 17 of the best stoner, doom and psychedelic rock bands playing around the world today featuring Abdullah, Aluna, Black Cesar, Dirtyred, El Topo, Godsize, Gonga, Grifter, I Am Colossus, Mos Generator, Obiat, Outburst, Queen Elephantine, Sonic Lord, Spacecharge, Suns of Thunder and The Harold Wartooth

Spleen Vs Ideal - Souvenirs
Produced by Billy Anderson A two-piece, a bassist/vocalist and a drummer, playing a mixture of Queens of the Stone Age, Man is the Bastard, Fantomas and Melvins!!!
