Grasshopper Grasshopper

/incoming/grassgrass.jpgMerely seeing the artwork made me optimistic - it took me back to around the turn of the millennium when you'd find new, incredible stoner rock sounds all over the place, often with covers not unlike Glasgow's Grasshopper have added here, and the font adding to that feel. Even then I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did.

It's only three songs, but it is one hell of a statement. It is what now feels like old-school stoner rock, Grey Rabbit conjures a clear image of the early Josiah albums in my mind, which is of course a great thing. It is of a different era - both the 70s it is in reverence to and the late 90s golden era of stoner rock, and psychedelically tinged. Only a few minutes in and it's clear this is wonderful, a touch of Nebula's space garage in here too. Any and all pointers and comparators are to something special, especially for what appears to be a three track demo debut.

The middle track is instrumental but by no means a filler. I'd seen Earth live the night before listening for the first time and, whilst more psych than drone it has some of their vibe in here, chilled and really nice with it. There's a little more tempo and energy to Old Man, that garage end of stoner I mentioned more obvious, but still overcast, clouding the vocals in particular in this fuzzy atmosphere.

This is my favourite demo from a new UK stoner band I've heard in a long time, it feels exciting to hear, to be able to see where they go from this incredibly lofty starting point.
