I'd just finished re-watching the Eulogy episode of Black Mirror and its cello led funeral ending, and a new Rüe appears, a band I've keenly followed since been taken aback a little with their self titled debut EP three years back. And be weird coincidence, it opens with a cello. Some things are just right.
It's haunting too, as so often is the case with the cello, and as such completely apt for our dark recesses of extreme music - you should hear more of it in metal you think. It sets the dour tone perfectly, before a hardcore splurge arrives, of a velocity that thrusts it beyond doom realms. It's a multi-component mash of crust, hardcore and sludge, the latter in effect particularly in its slower, denser second half, the sludge of pain and desperation. This is a sadly only a short three track EP, but one song in and it's already excellent.
Middle track Open Ended is a sub half minute grinding blast, whilst Heralded (a re-recording of a track from their last EP) harnesses this fast crust punk energy, a pummelling force that either knocks you down or sweeps you away depending on whether you face it head on or not. And then it's over, an all too fleeting visit, but still leaving their mark. Hopefully they'll return soon with more, but whatever they release, keep your eye out for it.
