There’s a deep rumbling emanating from the German borders these last few years, a brand of doom that submerges itself within deification of tone and bulk, following the lineage of their forefathers and countryment in Black Shape of Nexus – think of Pak40, The Wright Valley Trio, Keys of Henoch, Bellrope and more. Dresden’s From Yuggoth add themselves to that grouping, and welcomely so as the more the merrier.
Yes, the formula is crushing doom riffs, their assault tempered only slightly by cosmic effects, and a mystique-filled rich atmosphere. There are brief moments of melodic lucidness that bright a ray of light, typically before cracking you over the head and diving back into the doom very quickly.
Think Slomatics, Conan and their kin. The guitars are gorgeously thick with it. It ends with the excellent Deathlike Living (We Are Alpha), which moves on from the general stomping gait towards a more Bongzilla-styled swinging groove, atop which shouted vocals come across earnest and angry. There’s a nice psychedelic sheen settled over the heaviness, before a cool dropped down segment in its middle to end is followed by one final, inevitable riff return which is glorious.
There is so much great doom from Germany nowadays, From Yuggoth deserve to be recognised up there on a par among with their peers.
