You can always rely on Argentina to provide us with the most livewire and free heavy psych, a national scene that has provided the rest of the globe with an abundance of bands creating vibrant takes on the sound. Triangulo Negro are the latest to add to the weight of evidence.
The first track – caceria de brujas – is simply joyous. Its cool bass opening has a real tempo and beat to it, so that the instrumental heavy psych that follows is enthused and energetic, like a futuristic cyberpunk disco for wildcats and hippies. It instantly delivers an individuality which lays out the stall for the rest of the album from the get-go.
It tempers a little from there on out, but any disappointment dissipates with the surging stoner rock and psych that arrives, even if it is of a more standard flavour. mirese adentro veers towards the good times of Bad Wizard, with a solo that has me thinking of Slash, and other tracks merge blues and funk. The title track’s brightening stoner rock is another highlight.
It ends with las montañas, changing up once more, heavier than anything preceding it, crossing over the threshold from stoner to doom, albeit trading passages with strange synth assisted quieter moments. It highlights the variance Triangulo Negro provide, across an album that is quirky, inventive and lots of fun.
