Dungeön Hypnosis / A Ritual

/incoming/dunghypn.jpgDungeön made such an impression with their self-titled EP on Cursed Monk Records last year, that despite being only two songs long their new one lands with a tremor of excitement.

We are firmly, centrally in the world of doom of course, so there are nearly twenty minutes to delve into. Hypnosis begins with the occult doom of the fuzziest of dirty guitar tones that alone should warm your soul. There are inevitable comparisons to be made here, particularly as they are from Dorset – it is unavoidable and truth be told fair, but let’s just accept we all know who I’m talking about, and not say the words.

Instead make note how Dungeön are a couple of demos or EPs in, just a handful of songs total, but sound as impressive as any in this corner of the UK doom universe, on a level with more seasoned bands, such as the likes of Goblinsmoker.

A Ritual is similarly fuzz laden, maxed out to some new planet of space doom. It has a stoner punk tempo to it whilst always held within doom atmospheres by the overbearing fuzz levels. Most noticeably of all is, it’s a little different which is hard to do whilst remaining true to the core elements of this modern doom sound. Its middle drops down low, quiet and brooding, warped vocals disorientate and as that twirls its tendrils in the extended drawn out close it turns into a hypnotic draw for the ritual it is describing.

An excellent mini release, re-affirming the promise Dungeön have shown to date and giving further weight to the idea this is a band that’ll rise to prominence in our doom underground.
