Polly Death Drive

/incoming/polldeat.jpgLate one evening last month, whilst on holiday, I check the website emails and come across an email direct from a band, no PR intermediary mass mail out. And so found myself listening to Polly, a band previously unknown to me from Berlin, in my seaside cottage, a perfectly chilled psych experience to wind down the day.

After a gentle, wistful start to track one Dark, it moves up only slightly into a light touch psychedelic groove, then a hint of proto metal with the vocals arrival. Even then it remains in a chilled state that translates across to the listener. The following Daze is even better, with wonderfully relaxing vocals and some Wooden Shjips levels of psych calm and in the hints of fuzz propelled drive that resist the drop into psych comatose wilderness.

The title track has a hazy mood and simple pattern, a chilled if slightly unengaging listen, but the mystical angles and slight Eastern influences of Sleep raise the interest back up again. This is ramped up by the closing PDS, where the guitars shine, a relative extravagance breaking free whilst the bass does the psych ground laying work.

It has a lovely thin shroud of fuzz, a warming sensation – all of which can be said of the album as a whole, five tracks with of psychedelic cool that won me over on first listen and still proving its worth on repeat listens.
