Give Over Done In

/incoming/givedone.jpgI saw Give Over a few months back in support at a local punk gig, a new name to me and not realising who it was until they took the floor and saw Steve Myles, of Khuda and Thank and Groak and probably many other bands taking the mic; formerly known as FAxFO, they explained the Fuck About... phrase had been used by some unsavoury types (I didn't hear who) so they've changed names to the Yorkshire approved Give Over.

Little else is different from before, which is good as they were really finding their feet - a feral combination of all out grindcore madness and steamrollering sludge. They use these two sounds, with tempos at odds with each other, to stand out, and Done In captures that perfectly.

This is crust ridden powerviolence, but the combination of venom in the vocal snap and the static bristling production conjures the black and white album cover and hiss and crackle rising bile of Corrupted as much as anything - the first couple of tracks blaze around for a minute a piece, gloriously so.

Lyrically on point, vitriolic towards the state of the world and a rallying cry from the working class - take the austerity bite back of Austericide or the anti corporate war anger of Big Harmer - Done In proves an all round package that brawls outwardly whichever angle you approach it.

As it closes with Yearly Hundo and its guttural, slowish opening morphing into pv blinding splurge end followed by Zen and the Art of Scene Maintenance screaming "Don't let the bastards try to divide us" to the world, it seals a life affirming, burning fire of indignant, wonderful encapsulation of the UK underground.
